Fall crafts with little ones can feel impossible—between the mess, spills, and paint-covered hands. But here’s a fun hack that lets your baby or toddler enjoy pumpkin painting without the mess! This simple activity is perfect for a cozy fall afternoon, a Halloween craft, or even a sensory play idea.
How We Discovered This Hack
When my son was just 4 months old, we went to a fall family event where they had a special “baby pumpkin painting” station. I thought, there’s no way he can do this at his age! But then they handed us a pumpkin, squirted paint into a gallon bag, sealed it, and let him squish it around. He was mesmerized—pushing his little hands on the bag, watching the colors swirl together. It was the perfect first craft to do with him, and it’s a memory I’ll never forget.

What You’ll Need:
A small pumpkin (real or craft pumpkin works!)
A gallon-size zip-top bag
Washable paint (a few different fall colors—orange, yellow, purple, green, black, etc.)
Tape (optional, to keep the bag sealed tight)
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Place the pumpkin inside the gallon bag.
Add a few squirts of washable paint in different colors.
Seal the bag tightly (use tape if you want extra security).
Let your little one push, roll, and squish the pumpkin around inside the bag.
Watch as the paint spreads and creates a fun, colorful design!
Once you’re happy with the look, carefully remove the pumpkin and let it dry.
Why This Works So Well:
Mess-Free: No paint on hands, clothes, or tables.
Safe for Babies: Everything stays contained in the bag.
Sensory Fun: Toddlers love the squishy feeling of moving paint around.
Keepsake-Worthy: Each pumpkin turns out unique and adorable.
Pro Tips:
Use lighter colors if you want a brighter pumpkin—darker colors can mix into brown.
For extra durability, use acrylic craft paint (but only if you don’t mind it being more permanent).
If you want to extend the activity, try it with paper, wooden crafts, or foam shapes in the bag too!
This simple activity is a stress-free way to let even the youngest kids join in on fall fun. For us, it turned into a sweet little tradition that started when my son was just a baby—and it’s still one of our favorite fall crafts today.
