The 3 Swaddles We Used From 0–3 Months (And What We Learned the Hard Way)

When our baby was a newborn, swaddling felt like one of those “everyone else knows how to do this, why don’t we?” parenting skills. We officially stopped swaddling around 3 months when he started daycare, but those early weeks? Swaddles were a lifeline — once we figured them out.

Let’s rewind to the beginning and check out this video!

The Hospital Swaddles (aka: We Did Not Pass the Swaddle Test)

You know those thin hospital blankets that nurses turn into perfect burritos in under 3 seconds? Yeah… that skill did not transfer to us.

No matter how many times we watched the nurse do it:

  • One arm always escaped

  • The blanket somehow ended up around his neck (panic)

  • Or he Hulked his way out within minutes

It became clear very quickly that we did not pass the “swaddle test” as new parents. Enter: Velcro swaddles. And honestly? Thank goodness.

1. KeaBabies Organic Swaddle Sleep Sacks (Our First Velcro Swaddles)

These were the first swaddles we ordered in a sleep-deprived panic once we realized traditional swaddling wasn’t happening in our house.

What we loved:

  • Ultra-soft organic cotton that felt gentle on newborn skin

  • Breathable and lightweight — great for day or night sleep

  • Hip-healthy design, which gave us peace of mind as new parents

  • Velcro wings that made swaddling feel foolproof

These were simple, cozy, and did exactly what we needed them to do: keep our baby snug without us needing a YouTube tutorial every time.

If you’re brand new to swaddling and just want something that works, these were a solid starting point.

2. SwaddleMe Original Organic Swaddles (Very Similar, Still Reliable)

Once we learned Velcro swaddles were the way, we tried SwaddleMe Originals — and honestly, they were very similar in feel and function.

Why we liked them:

  • Soft 100% organic cotton

  • Secure fit that helped calm the startle reflex

  • Easy to adjust and re-wrap as needed

  • Designed specifically for newborns who like arms in

These were dependable, straightforward swaddles that did their job well. If you’ve seen SwaddleMe recommended everywhere — there’s a reason. They’re a go-to for many parents, and we had no complaints.

3. SwaddleMe Easy Change Swaddles (Our Absolute Favorite)

And then… we discovered the Easy Change zipper.

Game. Changer.

These quickly became our favorite swaddles because they solved one major newborn problem: diaper changes without fully waking the baby.

Why we loved them so much:

  • Bottom zipper meant quick, quiet diaper changes

  • No need to fully unwrap or re-swaddle half-asleep

  • Still snug and secure with Velcro wings

  • Soft, breathable cotton that held up to constant washing

If you’ve ever debated whether to change a diaper because your baby is finally asleep, you get it. These swaddles made nighttime changes so much less stressful.

If I could go back and do it again, I’d skip straight to these.

When We Stopped Swaddling

We stopped swaddling around 3 months, right when daycare started and our baby became more active. It felt like the right transition point for us — and by then, swaddles had done their job.

They helped us:

  • Get longer stretches of sleep

  • Reduce the startle reflex

  • Feel more confident during those overwhelming early weeks

Final Thoughts From a Very Tired Mama

If you’re struggling with swaddling right now, please know this:👉 It’s not you.👉 Hospital swaddles are a skill.👉 Velcro exists for a reason.

Swaddles aren’t about doing things “the right way” — they’re about finding what helps your baby (and you) get a little more rest.

And honestly? Any product that lets a newborn sleep longer than 20 minutes deserves a gold star.
