One of my favorite ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day with a toddler is through books. At this age, love looks like hugs, giggles, family time, and feeling safe—and books are such a sweet way to introduce those ideas.

These are the Valentine’s Day and love-themed books we’re adding to our toddler’s bookshelf wishlist this year. They’re perfect for bedtime, quiet moments, or just cozy cuddles on the couch.

💕 Love from The Very Hungry Caterpillar

📖 The World of Eric Carle

This charming board book celebrates love in the simplest, sweetest ways—just like toddlers do. Featuring the iconic Very Hungry Caterpillar illustrations.

It’s a gentle, heartfelt book that works beautifully for Valentine’s Day and all year long.

🐶 How to Be Romance with Bluey and Bingo (Lift-the-Flap)

📺 Inspired by Bluey

If your toddler loves Bluey, this one is a must. Through fun lift-the-flap moments, Bluey and Bingo show all the different ways the Heeler family expresses love—kindness, play, and togetherness.

It’s interactive, sturdy, and perfect for toddlers who like to stay busy while reading.

🔤 ABCs of Love (Books of Kindness)

Learning the alphabet while learning about love? Yes please. This board book focuses on social-emotional development with simple but meaningful messages:

  • A is for always

  • B is for bear hug

  • C is for cherish

It’s a beautiful reminder that love is something we practice every day, not just on Valentine’s Day.

🐒 Grumpy Monkey Valentine Gross-Out (Includes Stickers!)

Perfect for toddlers who aren’t into all the hearts and kisses. Jim Panzee isn’t exactly a Valentine’s Day fan, but this story does a great job showing that love comes in many forms—friends, family, and even unlikely moments.

Plus, it includes Valentine stickers, which is always a toddler win.

💋 Smooches! by Sandra Boynton

Sandra Boynton books are always a hit in our house, and Smooches! is no exception. With sweet rhymes, adorable illustrations, and a peek-through cover, this board book celebrates affection in a fun, playful way.

It’s the kind of book that naturally leads to extra hugs at bedtime—and honestly, I’m not mad about that.

💗 Final Thoughts

Valentine’s Day with a toddler doesn’t have to be about candy or big gestures. A few thoughtfully chosen books can spark conversations about love, kindness, and connection—while creating cozy moments you’ll both remember.

If you’re building a toddler bookshelf this season, these picks are such a sweet place to start 💕
