When it comes to baby toys, it’s easy to go a little overboard. But over the first couple of years, a few gems really stood out for us—practical, engaging, and just plain fun. Here are 7 toys that made a difference in our little one’s first months (and some we’re still loving!).
1. Fisher-Price Deluxe Kick & Play Piano Gym
We started this at 2 months old, right when he was discovering his feet. He loved kicking along to the songs (we had them memorized in no time). The mat has different configurations to encourage neck muscles, tummy time, and sitting practice. A perfect mix of music, movement, and exploration!
2. Lovevery Play Gym
We didn’t do the subscription, but the mat itself was a favorite. Washable, colorful, and texturally fun, it kept him engaged while exploring noises, colors, and textures. Stage-based design meant it grew with him from baby to toddler.
3. Rattle Socks
These little wrist and foot rattles were a great way for him to discover his hands and feet. He loved the animal designs and bright colors, and honestly… we got some funny giggles out of him shaking them for the first time.
4. First Family Album
This soft photo book is still in use over 2 years later. We filled it with family pictures and bonus mirrors, which helped him learn family member names. It’s perfect for little ones practicing recognition and it’s sturdy enough to keep growing with him.
5. Flip Fish Soft Toy
Melissa & Doug really hit the mark with this one. Tummy time? Check. Grabby hands? Check. Color exploration? Double check. Soft textures and vibrant colors kept him entertained and learning at the same time.
6. Baby Einstein Sea Dreams Soother
This made a big appearance on our night drives. It has multiple settings and a “calm clicker” for easy on/off control. Bonus: it doubles as a musical crib toy and sound machine, so nap and bedtime routines got a little easier.
7. Tummy Time Mirror Toy
This gift was one of my favorites. With high-contrast black and white designs, colors, and a mirror, it was great for tummy time, practicing sitting, and sensory exploration. Versatile, stimulating, and fun—exactly what a good baby toy should be.
Bottom Line:
Not every toy needs to be fancy. The ones that encourage exploration, help develop new skills, and grow with your baby are the real winners. These seven were hits for us—and I suspect your little one will love them too!
