The Things We Kept in Our Living Room During the Newborn Stage (And Why)

During the newborn stage, survival is the goal. You’re exhausted, emotional, healing, and learning a whole new rhythm — the last thing you want is to be running up and down stairs or from room to room every time your baby needs something. One of the best decisions we made was setting up our living room to function almost like a mini nursery.
Here’s what we kept in our living room during the newborn stage — and why every single item earned its spot.

1. The Pack ‘n Play (With Bassinet + Changing Pad)
This was hands-down the MVP of our living room setup.
Our pack ‘n play had both a bassinet and a changing pad attachment, and it was clutch more times than I can count. Having a safe place for baby to nap and an easy changing station right there meant fewer trips to the nursery and way less disruption throughout the day.
Middle-of-the-day diaper changes? Easy. Quick place to set baby down while grabbing water or food? Done. It gave us peace of mind and convenience all in one.
If you’re debating whether it’s worth setting one up outside the nursery — it absolutely is.
2. A Rolling Cart With Everyday Essentials
Right next to the pack ‘n play, we kept a rolling cart stocked with everything we wanted within arm’s reach. This saved us from constantly running between floors or rooms and made long days (and cluster-feeding afternoons) so much easier. Here is the one we used and at 2.5 years later, we still keep in our living room.
Here’s what we kept stocked on our cart:
Diapers
Wipes
Hand sanitizer
Vaseline
Diaper cream
Nail trimmer
Changing pad liners
Extra clothes (for blowouts or spit-up moments)
Blanket
Swaddle
Burp cloths
Pacifiers
Nursing pads
Everything had a purpose, and having it all together meant fewer frantic searches and less stress when baby needed something right now.
3. LOVEVERY | The Play Gym
This was our go-to spot for awake time during the day.
We kept the LOVEVERY Play Gym set up in our living room so baby could safely stretch, kick, and do tummy time while still being close to us. It was perfect for those short wake windows when we wanted stimulation without overstimulation.
Having it out and ready meant we actually used it — instead of forgetting it existed or needing to drag it out every time. It also gave us a safe place to put baby down while we sat nearby, folded laundry, ate, or just took a breath.
Bonus: it helped establish a gentle routine between naps, feeds, and play without leaving the main living space.
Why This Setup Worked So Well
The newborn stage is unpredictable. Some days blur together, and sometimes just standing up feels like too much. Having everything we needed in one central spot made our days smoother and more manageable.
It also helped us:
Stay organized during sleep deprivation
Reduce unnecessary movement while healing
Keep baby close during the day
Feel a little more in control during a chaotic season
Final Thoughts
You don’t need a perfectly styled living room during the newborn stage — you need a functional one. Creating a small, intentional setup with the essentials can make a world of difference when you’re in survival mode.
If you’re preparing for a newborn (or already in it), give yourself permission to prioritize ease and convenience. You’re not doing it wrong — you’re doing what works.
And that’s more than enough 🤍
