Holiday Shopping as a Mom: Staying Sane, Saving Smart & Clicking “Add to Cart” from the Couch

Every year when those big shopping days roll around, I get a mix of excitement and mild panic. There’s just so much to keep track of — deals, wish lists, shipping times, and, of course, keeping my toddler from turning my laptop into a snack tray.

If I’m being honest, I’ve fully embraced that Cyber Monday is more my speed these days. Give me a cozy blanket, a hot coffee, and the comfort of my couch over crowded aisles and 5 a.m. lines any day. Online shopping is where I thrive — and where I can actually think straight while still getting those holiday deals.

As I plan my shopping list, I like to think ahead — what will my child need (or want) in the coming year? This is the perfect time to grab bigger purchases that I know are coming up soon. For example, we’re due to upgrade our car seat because my toddler likes a roomier fit (translation: they’ve made their feelings about cramped car rides very clear).

Other things that usually make my list? Magnatiles, Legos, Tonies, Disney finds, gaming systems, and electronics like the Amazon tablet. And on the practical side, I always check if there are any good sales on home appliances we’ve been eyeing — like a Hamilton Beach air fryer or Ninja system. It’s not glamorous shopping, but it’s the kind that makes life easier.

In previous years, my focus has been on big-ticket items for my child’s next stage — a new car seat, a bigger bike, maybe a wagon or baby carrier if that’s what fits our season of life. I also try to anticipate their clothing sizes for upcoming seasons. I’ll ask myself: “If they’re in 3T now, what size will they be by spring?” That way, I can grab good-quality items early — especially from brands like Cat & Jack (because, let’s be real, their return policy is a lifesaver) and Old Navy, which always seems to hit that sweet spot between cute and budget-friendly.

Another trick I’ve learned? A lot of stores start their deals early or tease what will go on sale, so I make a list ahead of time. As a mom, my time is limited — I can’t casually browse endless pages of deals while juggling snacks, nap times, and laundry. Having a plan helps me stay focused instead of getting swept up in every “limited time offer” I see.

And speaking of planning — I always think about what’s coming up in the next few months. Trips? Family visits? Maybe a Disney vacation? Then I check if I can score early deals on things like suitcases, travel gear, or packing cubes. Even if I don’t need them right away, it’s nice to buy now at a discount and thank myself later.

We don’t go overboard with gifts during the holidays, but I know many families use this shopping weekend to knock out their entire gift list. It’s honestly a great time to do it — especially if you like to shop small. I’ve found some amazing Etsy deals on personalized or handmade pieces that still arrive in time for the season.

At the end of the day, though, the biggest thing I remind myself of is the budget. Some deals might look incredible, but if it’s not in the budget, it’s not worth the stress. There will always be another sale. My goal is to shop smart — not impulsive.

So, this year, you’ll find me right where I’m happiest: curled up on the couch, toddler playing nearby, coffee in hand, scrolling through deals with a well-organized list in front of me. Because as a mom, holiday shopping isn’t about the thrill of the hunt — it’s about getting what we actually need without losing our minds in the process.
