Fall is here, which means it’s pumpkin spice season… and apparently, pumpkin baby season too. Yes, we went full ā€œbaby in a pumpkinā€ mode this year. Spoiler: it was adorable, slightly messy, and completely worth it. Here’s how we survived (and actually got cute photos).

Baby smiling inside a carved pumpkin with a dog sniffing nearby. Two small pumpkins on white fabric background. Playful and adorable mood.

Step 1: Find the Perfect Pumpkin

We hit up a pumpkin patch and picked a giant pumpkin—because small pumpkins are cute, but not exactly baby-throne material. Tip: go big or go home.

Step 2: Wash Off All That Pumpkin Dirt

Nobody wants a dirty pumpkin touching a baby’s body. A quick rinse gets rid of the grime and makes it look Instagram-ready.

Step 3: Cut It Up

  • Lay down a trash bag. Trust me, this step will save your floors (and your sanity).

  • Cut the top off and scoop out all the seeds and stringy pulp—bonus: you now have a mini pumpkin carving session.

  • Cut holes for the legs using a red solo cup to trace circles. Make them big enough so your baby can actually wiggle in and out. Scrape any leftover pulp so there are no pumpkin ā€œsticky traps.ā€

Step 4: Make It Baby-Friendly

  • Line the inside with a soft blanket.

  • Use a swaddle or little rolled-up blankets to help prop your baby up. Think of it as pumpkin padding.

  • Our little one was 4 months old at the time, and we just went with a diaper. Warm, cozy, and easy. You can absolutely go the extra cute route and dress them in an outfit, but sometimes less is more.

Step 5: Decorate (and Fake a Fall Scene)

  • Surround the pumpkin with smaller pumpkins and fake leaves. Instant fall vibes.

  • Bonus photo idea: lay your baby on a blanket in a pile of fake leaves. Cozy, warm, and still festive without squeezing them into a pumpkin for every shot.

Step 6: Capture the Magic

  • Keep your camera ready, your baby happy, and your coffee close.

  • Natural light is your friend here. Try a top-down shot, a side angle, and some close-ups.

  • Expect a little chaos (maybe a pumpkin sneeze, maybe a leaf snack). It’s part of the charm.

Final Thoughts:

This photoshoot is equal parts cute and chaotic—but totally worth it. Your baby will probably be comfy, you’ll probably be covered in pumpkin bits, and you’ll definitely get a frame-worthy photo. And if all else fails… there’s always the bonus leaf-pile shot.
